intro past present future
Lumina was commissioned to run a two year project in the Waterloo, London area. This project aimed to engage the community, and particularly, hard to reach groups in a high quality visual arts project. We worked with 540 participants in 2 primary schools, holiday play schemes and in community groups, working with older people and families.

The result of these workshops was The Birdcage, a 5 metre high spinning, lit sculpture which is both a static and processional spectacle. It uses a Victorian theme and all of the details such as shadow puppets and decorative jewels were made by community participants.. The Birdcage is accompagned by an ethereal dance track and by two lady Ornothologists, who are characters created by Topical Broadcast, a Tower Hamlets based street performance company. These characters engage and involve the audience spotting new bird species with their binoculars.
